10 Activities To Try This Summer

Summer is finally here, and while short, there are lots of ways to be active and enjoy the summer months. Here are 10 ways you can be active this summer and get the most out of it. Summer is a great time to try new activities. Remember, you don’t have to be good at something to do it or enjoy it!

Gardening: Gardening is a great summer activity that is low-impact and will get you outside. If bending or getting to the ground is an issue, you can use an elevated planter box that will have you working upright. Think gardening isn’t a physical task? Try carrying bags of soil and compost back and forth!

Disc Golf: Disc golf is an outdoor activity that is similar to golf, but involves throwing a frisbee instead of hitting a ball with clubs. The goal is still the same: complete each hole in the fewest throws. There are approximately 26 disc golf courses in Calgary, most of which are free to use! All you need is a disc and some sunscreen.

Berry Picking: Another fun outdoor summer activity is berry picking! There are a number of U Pick berry farms just outside the city, or find one near you on vacation. Not only will it get you outside and moving, but you get to eat the fruits of your labour!

Fishing: While you might not think fishing itself is overly active, hiking around the lake for the perfect spot sure can be! Grab a rod and lures and head out to your favourite lake or river. There are also many fishing spots around the province that you can hike into. Just be sure to check out the rules and regulations for each body of water and make sure you have the appropriate license.

Pickleball: Pickleball is a sport that has become increasingly popular the past number of years. It is similar to both tennis and table tennis. Because pickleball is lower-impact than tennis, it still is an activity option if you have shoulder concerns. Check out https://pickleballcanada.org for more information.

Try a New Sport: If you’re looking for ways to keep active, why not try a new sport? Many organizations, such as the Calgary Sport and Social Club, offer drop-in nights where you can try a new sport with no commitments. Offerings include beach volleyball, spikeball and even dodgeball!

Biking: Biking is a classic outdoor activity to do in the summer. The city has a network of pathways that can take you all throughout the city. If you want to go for a longer sightseeing ride but you’re unsure if you can make it, try renting an e-bike. With e-bikes, you can use as much or as little assistance as you want, so you can still get a workout while being able to go on a longer ride.

Geocaching: Be part of a worldwide treasure hunt with Geocaching! Geocaching is an outdoor adventure activity that can combine walking, hiking and sometimes climbing. Participants use GPS to locate items called geocaches. Check out www.geocaching.com/play for more information on how to get started.

Beach Volleyball: What’s better than sand and sun? Getting some exercise at the same time, of course! Grab some friends together for a game of beach volleyball at one of Calgary’s sand courts or on whatever beach you end up at this summer. The added resistance of the sand is a sure way to get your heart rate up.Whatever activities you want to do this summer, don’t let injuries or pain hold you back.
