As a personal trainer, it’s a little self-aggrandizing to suggest that my services may boost not just your physical but even your mental health, more than training on your own, however, even science backs it up!
A recent study from the journal, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, showed that participants who were coached on their intensity, instead of setting their own pace, worked harder and reported better mood scores. I’ve had many clients share how the performance push in the gym has helped them learn perseverance in their businesses and home life. Learning how to push through tough times in the gym translates to pushing through tough times in many other aspects of life! Definitely having a coach to challenge you and raise your ceiling is a big part of the benefits of having a trainer, however, it is not the whole story.
In my experience, training many clients over the course of my 20+ year career, I’ve found all kinds of examples of how mental health improved significantly. Having a trainer that knows what they are doing and caters their approach to each client in accordance with their personality, training history and physical/mental needs instills motivation, confidence, encouragement, accountability, and advocacy. All of which translates to a healthier and happier human being! For many clients, just having someone dedicated and devoted to them for 1 hour who genuinely cares can go a long way in their life. Someone that will listen and speak into their life in some constructive way is a big part of contributing to their sense of self and therefore mental well-being. Give personal training a try and see what it can do for you, perhaps it’s just what you need to take your mental game to the next level.
